How It Started . . .
By: Lita Pontiveros Salcedo Hermana 1999 - 2000
For all the Majayjayenos living in our homeland and anywhere around the world, our Saint Gregory Church is our legacy. It is one of the oldest and one of the largest churches ever built in the Philippines. Its grandeur and beauty is a symbol of our town and the pride for all of us. The restoration and preservation of our church is credited to various Catholic organizations in Majayjay . One of these organizations is the Samahang Pagkakaisa, which by tradition is always given the responsibility for the yearly activity for the veneration of our Blessed Mother, Virgin Mary called " Pagayak " every month and the " Pagaalay ng Bulaklak " everyday for the whole month of May. This is culminated by a celebration called " Flores de Mayo " celebrated on the last Sundays of May. The leadership of the Samahang Pagkakaisa are provided by the joint effort of the Hermano and Hermana who are nominated and chosen one year in advance. In our case, Hermano Rene Esmaquel and myself, Lita Pontiveros Salcedo as Hermana were picked out from the so-called " Kinakalog sa Hermanahan " on May 1998. We started our term of office in June 1999 and ended on May 28, 2000 with a fiesta - " Flores de Mayo cum Santacruzan ". It was a great privilege and honor for us to be chosen as Hermano and Hermana. As a common belief, it is good luck. During our monthly Pagayak with the priores and prioras, I noticed that there were lots of things inside our church that needed attention for the upliftment and restoration , such as the chandeliers, sound system and most importantly, the dilapidated pews. Insted of planning other things for us to do, I proposed and discussed all these three items mentioned above to the Hermano and the entire Samahang Pagkakaisa. I was very inspired in planning these three priorities even though I was reminded by my colleagues that the projects were too big for just a limited time. But limited time didn't stop us from doing what we thought was right and doing this for our church and the people of Majayjay gave us the energy and wisdom to get these projects started. We drafted solicitation letters signed by our Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Jun Olaso on October 2000. Our motto was .... One Pew --- One Family -- One Majayjayeno. At first, we didn't know where to start. But true enough, if you're guided by God, everything would come exactly right in a meaningful way. We started gathering names and addresses to write; speaking before a Rotary Club about our projects; and the best thing that happened was the creation of a our Majayjay website authored by Delio and Cleo Jacildo of Long Beach, California USA. This internet - website was offered to me and it became the fastest way of reaching out the Majayjayenos who are now residing in different parts of the world. With Delio Jacildo's creativity and whole-hearted service, he designed the website in such a way that all aspects relative to the welfare of Majayjay be touched. It really did an incredible outreach and communication. The success of the projects of Samahang Pagkakaisa 1999 - 2000 were all indebted to this website which Delio Jacildo did and designed. With this modern or high tech form of communicationn nothing is impossible for us to reach. We're able to get in touch with our " Kababayans " all over the world. Through these projects, the closeness and friendships during our childhood years in Majayjay rekindled and awakened most of us to become a Good Samaritan. All of these contributed to the accomplishments and realization of the projects. So, we say Mabuhay, Mabuhay Majayjayenos ! ! !
